Majority of people first see a massage therapist because of some physical pain. One of the most common complaints is back pain. As a therapist, its very rewarding to help someone overcome a painful condition so they can enjoy life pain-free once more. It’s also very gratifying to work with a client on a regular basis to focus on maintaining a healthy body. Massage offers so many benefits to help your body function at its best. I find the clients that enjoy the greatest gains from massage are those who make it a regular part of their lives. For many, modern day living can be very stressful. Make sure you take a little time for yourself to relax and unwind. And the best way to de-stress yourself is with therapeutic massage session.

Maintaining a healthy back is vital to your overall health. Your spinal cord, is like your own information highway. It sends messages that affect every aspect of your health. You want to do everything do enhance its proper function.

An ancient adage from Yoga states, “You are as young as your spine is flexible.” It is estimated that approximately 80 percent of us will experience back pain at some point in our lives. As the most common cause of discomfort and disability for people under 45, it is also the main reason people miss work, second only to the common cold. Anyone who has had serious bout with back pain knows how debilitating it can be.

Several things can cause back pain, among them tension, trauma or strain, improper sleeping positions, and sedentary lifestyles. Pregnancy is often accompanied by back pain due to the added weight the mother-to-be carries in her lower abdomen. If you find your back startig to act up, being aware of potential problems and seeking to correct hem is an excellent first step.

If your job requires you to sit at you desk a good part of the time, you may find quick relief in getting up frequently. An exercise regime including stretching, swimming, walking, or weight training also proves helpful in dealing with back pain.

In today’s bustling world, tension is often found to be the culprit. Whether brought about by stressful situations, poor posture, improper body alignment, etc., the result is the same. Certain muscles tense (the muscle fibers contract) and fail to relax properly. When this occurs in the back, it can begin to affect the body structurally, causing further problems.

Another typical source of back pain is muscle strain. When you overexert a back muscle, it can seize up in an effot to protect itself from further injury. The good news is that most back pain can be prevented by keeping the muscles and joints supple and mobile, greatly aided through regular massage sessions. Through its stretching and relaxing strokes, massage is quite effective for restoring the normal range of motion and for easing muscle spasms. Sometimes a deeper massage is helpful in releasing areas of chronic tension and it increases blood circulation to that area.

Everyone has heard the saying, “Use it or lose it.” It’s all too easy to lose your flexibility over the years through lack of activity. And since many physical changes happen so gradually, one day you find yourself wondering where your mobility went. This lack of movement leads to an achy tightness in those unused muscle groups. As one group of muscles goes unused, your body begins to change position or posture, another set of muscles reacts by becoming tighter. Without proper use, you body tends to adjust more permanently to this new position, further restricting your range of motion. Another cause of tightness through overuse of a muscle or muscle group. We’ve all experienced pushing ourselves beyond our limits of conditioning. Physically, a muscle has some give and take from its normal “at rest” position. According to exercise physiologist, Linda DiCarlo at Georgia Tech, when a muscle clenches, tiny fibers within it slide past one and another like interlocking finges. When it stretches, the fibers loosen their grip and slide back the other way. When used past their comfort point, muscles remain in a semi-ontracted state. Regular stretching exercises can eas the tightness that limit range of motion. But be patient! Just as these changes happen very gradually over the years, you should allow yourself plenty of time to begin correcting these trouble areas. Your regular massage sessions also contribute to improving your range of motion and keeping you limber. If you would like more information regarding stretching, please be sure to ask at your next session. CHANGE A LIFE- INTRODUCE A FRIEND OR LOVED ONE TO THE BENEFITS OF MASSAGE!

In China, medical texts refer to it as early as 3000 B.C. Today massage therapy is being used by a wide range of people as a pain reliever, antidote to stress, and enhancer of athletic performance. A survey conducted by the American Massage Therapy Association showed that 25 million more Americans received massage in the year 2006 than they did in 1996. Doctors are referring patients for massage as well. Andrew Weil, MD and author of Spontaneous Healing said, “[Massage] works on the premise … that the body can heal itself if given a chance. Massage nurtures the body’s talent for healing by triggering and supporting the body’s own healing response.” Recent research has shown that massage lowers blood pressure, increases circulation, relaxes muscles and improves range of motion . What’s more, it reduces the effects of stress and can ease the impulse to tighten in response to pain. Because of these results, many people are finding that massage helps them heal faster from injuries and disease. Studies also demonstrate that the benefits of regular massage tend to accumulate, easing long-term tension, conditioning tissues to help prevent injury, and enhancing your ability to breathe more deeply and relax more fully. This Valentine’s Day give your honey the gift that everyone loves… Massage! Aromatherapy, the art of scent Essential oils can boost your mood, relieve stress Aromatherapy is the application of essential oils through baths, spa treatments, facials or massage. Essential oils are distilled from plants — such as lavender, eucalyptus and peppermint — which give the oils their fragrances and therapeutic qualities. Research on the sense of smell has shown that scent is perceived by the part of the brain connected with emotion, and that a scent that pleases you or is associated with a happy event will increase your feeling of well-being. That effect can be heightened when essential oils, easily added to massage oils and creams, are combined with massage. According to Peter and Kate Damian, authors of Aromatherapy: Scent and Psyche — Using Essential Oils for Physical and Emotional Well-Being, jasmine, lavender, neroli (orange blossom), and rose are effective in reducing anxiety. These oils in addition to clary sage are helpful for panic and soothing the nerves. Jasmine and lavender as well as basil are believed to help improve sleep. While certified aromatherapists focus solely on the use of essential oils, other professionals such as estheticians, spa professionals and massage therapists often enhance their services with the wonderful properties of these oils. Massage for back pain Study shows long-term benefits Research has shown massage to be very effective in reducing low-back pain. One study published in the Archives of Internal Medicine followed back-pain sufferers who participated in three different groups receiving either massage, acupuncture, or educational information. After ten weeks, the massage group reported a 47% improvement, while the acupuncture group improved by 38% and the educational group improved by 27%. The study showed that the benefits of massage lasted far longer than the post-massage feeling of relaxation. Even a year after the study was finished, the massage group maintained benefits. How does massage reduce back pain? Massage eases tension and muscle spasm. As the muscles relax, circulation increases, bringing healing oxygen to the tissues. Certain massage techniques release painful trigger points, and increase flexibility and mobility in the body. Massage therapists are trained to be sensitive in dealing with sore, painful tissues. If you have back pain, the goal will be to work well within your pain threshold, gently encouraging relaxation in the back, and throughout the body. Imagine how much better your back, and your body overall, could feel with improved blood flow to the muscles, decreased tension and trigger points, relaxation and easier movement. The more high technology around us, the more the need for human touch. –John Naisbitt, Author of Megatrends MASSAGE THERAPY BY DONNA KIMMEL 111 BUCK RD.

Ask the average person what they think of when you say massage therapy and they most likely will say, getting sore or tight muscles rubbed, getting relaxed or reducing tension. These are probably the main reasons most people seek out massage treatments. Massage addresses many different issues every day. Many of these conditions may not directly apply to you, but you man know someone, friend, family member who is affected. At the very least, you should find it interesting to learn just how beneficial massage therapy is to all of us in our quest to lead a happy and healthy life.

The medical conditions that people find therapeutic massage can help include:

allergies

anxiety

arthritis

asthma and bronchitis

carpal tunnel syndrome

chronic and temporary pain

circulatory problems

depression

digestive disorders

headache, especially when due to tension

insomnia

myofascial pain, a condition of the tissue connecting the muscles

reduced range of motion

sinusitis

sports injuries

stress

TMJ, jaw dysfunction

As interest in massage therapy grow, more studies are being conducted to verify the results clients have reported for years. In a recent study supports the evidence that immune funciton is strenghtened by massage therapy, in both healthy people as well as those who are fighting disease. An increase in white blood cells and natural killer-cell activity better prepares the body to fight off possible invading cells. The cellular changes suggest that immune system benefited from the massages. The University of Miami did a study on women who were diagnosed with breast cancer. The women who received regular massage therapy (three times a week, for five weeks) showed 80 percent improved immune function. These studies show how massage effects the immune funtion in the body. Studies also show how massage alleviates stress, relax muscles and now possibly serve as an alternative medical practice. Another study done at Miama University addressed fibromyalgia (chronic condition, causing muscular pain, aching, and stiffness afflicting three to six million Americans). The study revealed that, people who were massaged twice a week for five weeks, experienced decreased pain and fatigue. Stiffness and improvements in sleep were also noted by the study. If you are fortunate enough to have excellent health, consider what benefits massage can provide for you. What is becoming evident from the growing number of studies on massage benefits is that massage is helping people to enjoy more optimal physical functioning. And this in turn can lead to a better mental outlook.

The next time you hear someone say that massage is only a luxury, you’ll know that massage is really a tool that can help improve a body’s ability to regain and maintain proper function. Making you feel terrific is just a wonderful BONUS!

As the year of 2007 is about to end, I always reflect at the year I have had, and I am thankful and have alot of gratitude for the love of family and friends I have in my life. In May of 2007 I attended a retreat, with my Mother, a very good friend and her mother. This is an annual retreat we go to, and I always come away inspired. This retreat was just different for me, and very special. It was the last that I would attend at the Dominican Retreat House in Elkins Park, Pennsylvania for it was closing its doors. I would no longer walk the grounds and bask in the beauty of the perfectly landscaped lawns, with azealas covering the property. The beautiful chapel inside, and the kindness of the sisters during the retreat. I would have the memory of those years of prayer, meditation and awareness on this beautiful estate in Elkins Park. My last retreat inspired my life from that day on I will never be the same. I listened to a serman by a priest, so intently I new from that day on I had become a different person, and I must and will realize that each day in my life is a gift. And that I must take that gift and make the very most of it each and every day. The priest read this poem to group of retreaters, that day and I want to share it with you. Maybe you can see what I mean and understand the beautiful meaning behind the poem.

THE DASH Written by Linda Ellis

I read of a man who stood to speak at the funeral of a friend. He referred to the dates on her tombstone, from the beginning….to the end.

He noted that first came the date of her birth and spoke of the following date with tears, but he said what mattered most of all…was the dash between those years.

For that dash represents all the time that she spent alive on the earth and now only those who loved her know what the little line is worth.

For it matters not, how much we own, the cars…the house…the cash… What matters is how we live and love… and how we spend our dash.

So think about this long and hard; are there things you’d like to change? For you never know how much time is left that can still rearranged.

If we could just slow down enough to consider what’s the truth and real… and always try to understand the way other people feel.

And be less quick to anger and show appreciation more, and love the people in our lives… like we’ve never loved before.

If we treat each other with respect and more often wear a smile… remembering that this special dash might only last a little while.

So when your eulogy is being read… with your life’s actions to rehash… would you be proud of the things that they say… about how you spent your dash?

thanks, for taking the time to read the poem. Living in my dash, Donna Kimmel
