Majority of people first see a massage therapist because of some physical pain. One of the most common complaints is back pain. As a therapist, its very rewarding to help someone overcome a painful condition so they can enjoy life pain-free once more. It’s also very gratifying to work with a client on a regular basis to focus on maintaining a healthy body. Massage offers so many benefits to help your body function at its best. I find the clients that enjoy the greatest gains from massage are those who make it a regular part of their lives. For many, modern day living can be very stressful. Make sure you take a little time for yourself to relax and unwind. And the best way to de-stress yourself is with therapeutic massage session.
Maintaining a healthy back is vital to your overall health. Your spinal cord, is like your own information highway. It sends messages that affect every aspect of your health. You want to do everything do enhance its proper function.
An ancient adage from Yoga states, “You are as young as your spine is flexible.” It is estimated that approximately 80 percent of us will experience back pain at some point in our lives. As the most common cause of discomfort and disability for people under 45, it is also the main reason people miss work, second only to the common cold. Anyone who has had serious bout with back pain knows how debilitating it can be.
Several things can cause back pain, among them tension, trauma or strain, improper sleeping positions, and sedentary lifestyles. Pregnancy is often accompanied by back pain due to the added weight the mother-to-be carries in her lower abdomen. If you find your back startig to act up, being aware of potential problems and seeking to correct hem is an excellent first step.
If your job requires you to sit at you desk a good part of the time, you may find quick relief in getting up frequently. An exercise regime including stretching, swimming, walking, or weight training also proves helpful in dealing with back pain.
In today’s bustling world, tension is often found to be the culprit. Whether brought about by stressful situations, poor posture, improper body alignment, etc., the result is the same. Certain muscles tense (the muscle fibers contract) and fail to relax properly. When this occurs in the back, it can begin to affect the body structurally, causing further problems.
Another typical source of back pain is muscle strain. When you overexert a back muscle, it can seize up in an effot to protect itself from further injury. The good news is that most back pain can be prevented by keeping the muscles and joints supple and mobile, greatly aided through regular massage sessions. Through its stretching and relaxing strokes, massage is quite effective for restoring the normal range of motion and for easing muscle spasms. Sometimes a deeper massage is helpful in releasing areas of chronic tension and it increases blood circulation to that area.
Everyone has heard the saying, “Use it or lose it.” It’s all too easy to lose your flexibility over the years through lack of activity. And since many physical changes happen so gradually, one day you find yourself wondering where your mobility went. This lack of movement leads to an achy tightness in those unused muscle groups. As one group of muscles goes unused, your body begins to change position or posture, another set of muscles reacts by becoming tighter. Without proper use, you body tends to adjust more permanently to this new position, further restricting your range of motion. Another cause of tightness through overuse of a muscle or muscle group. We’ve all experienced pushing ourselves beyond our limits of conditioning. Physically, a muscle has some give and take from its normal “at rest” position. According to exercise physiologist, Linda DiCarlo at Georgia Tech, when a muscle clenches, tiny fibers within it slide past one and another like interlocking finges. When it stretches, the fibers loosen their grip and slide back the other way. When used past their comfort point, muscles remain in a semi-ontracted state. Regular stretching exercises can eas the tightness that limit range of motion. But be patient! Just as these changes happen very gradually over the years, you should allow yourself plenty of time to begin correcting these trouble areas. Your regular massage sessions also contribute to improving your range of motion and keeping you limber. If you would like more information regarding stretching, please be sure to ask at your next session. CHANGE A LIFE- INTRODUCE A FRIEND OR LOVED ONE TO THE BENEFITS OF MASSAGE!

| Venturing out again with Mr. Simplicity we came across, Patagonia Bar and Grill in Richboro, PA. It was quite ironic that we were just at Cafe con Leche a week prior to our visit at Patagonia. The owner and operator, chef Daniel Lucci and his wife Silvia have run Cafe con Leche for 10 years. The menu is 50 percent South American, because they are from Argentina. The other half of the menu is fusion -Asian,Mexican, Italian, and Spanish. Once entering this attractive restaurant, a visitor warms immediately to this relaxed atmosphere. So, Mr. Simplicity and myself walked into Patagonia not really knowing much about the menu or the chef’s style of cooking. We were pleasantly surprised. The server was phenominal, friendly, and very explanatory with the entrees on the menu. I once again, ordered the salmon. blackened with avocado salsa, and grilled with pumpkin seeds and tomato pesto. Sauteed with capers, in a garlic lemon white wine sauce. It was fabulous! A must try for anyone loving salmon, which i do. Mr. S also ordered a fish entree which is a little switch from his usual veal selection. The atmosphere was quite, and relaxed. The decor was trendy yet tasteful. I would recommend this restaurant for a great dinner out at a quality restaurant and you don’t have to go far to get there. Mr. S tried the sweet potato jalepeno soup, which was complimentary. It was to his liking, but just a bit too much kick with the spices for me. But hey if you like that spicy hot kind of stuff, then go for it…. The Patagonia is also open for breakfast and lunch, which would be a better recommendation for a family outing. Its trendy and fun, and just seems to better suited for the couples not accompaning small children. They also do catering and on and off site, and have a take out menu. Give it a try and enjoy the very diverse, great tasting menu of Daniel Lucci. |

Dining at the Churchville Inn, Southampton PA with Mr. Simplicity was yet another adventure in the blog of Donna Kimmel. The Churchville Inn has a rustic yet homey feeling when you enter. A friend of mine, liked the smokey-filled bar area, and of course liking it especially because of the easily viewed football game on the small screen television. My friend, is what I call a football fanatic, an obsessive fan, a huge source of silly football trivia. Which he can re-sight to you at any given moment. A fan of our own Philadelphia Eagle quarterback, which is one of our constant debates. I debate and declare persistently that our quarterback is washed up and should just do chunky soup commercials, due to a failing running game and spiraling torpedo passes thrown at the ankles of his receivers. But, I will be fair and tell you my friend values and admires our Philadelphia QB, saying when he is great he is awesome. And still has much game left in him. So, I will move on from that topic, because the debate will continue.
The wait was short, the restaurant was packed. We sat at a table in the middle of the room, the chatter was loud. But sitting there you felt like you were in a big party in a room filled with people who were just enjoying their experience and conversation. It almost felt like the neighborhood was all hanging together and just enjoying the party. I ordered french onion soup, which my friend and I shared. It was tasty and a nice little appetizer to our entrees. I ate a small amount of the delicious soup, for sharing with my friend is quite a challenge. It’s almost like just watching and quickly delving in, while you distract him to the view of that football game on the small screen. Which was viewable from our table, and that made my friend quite happy.
I ordered the salmon, which I usually do at my restaurant outings. I am not much of a red meat eater, so fish or chicken is usually the choice entree for me. My friend got a little daring and ordered the jambalaya. He enjoyed it and would recommend the entree, it was spicy and plentiful. The salmon was excellent, it was glazed with a sweet sauce. I would recommend the Churchville Inn, it is both economical and gives you quite a homey and warm feeling while dining there.
One last note, if there is some football trivia you would like to know, please send me a line and I will gladly pass it on to the Football Trivia Expert.
Oh, I love football but 6 games of watching is much in one day. February 3rd is a wonderful day. I still believe we need a new QB!!
If you are visiting the Cafe con Leche from State Street, look for the small sign you see in the photo above. The cafe is in the basement of the building. The entrance is bright and cheerful, the decor is a Mexican style. Although, it is quite hidden away it is definitely worth the find. I recently ventured there by the recommendation of one of my clients. I went to Cafe con Leche, with someone special. I will keep his name anonymous, so I shall call him, my frugal/cheep/plain friend. He is a man of the simple, yet meaningful things in life. Not realy. He values the sole proprietor, and steers away from the chain-type restaurants. So each weekend is an adventure with Mr. Frugal to find the next best restaurant in Bucks County. We usually grade and evaluate the menu and service of each restaurant visited. So we entered Cafe con Leche. If was quite crowded, there are two small rooms with about a half a dozen tables each. It was quaint, and the people dining were enjoying the very original and delectable meals. We waited for about 15 minutes for an open table. While waiting we perused the desserts, peaking in the refrigerator window. There was a chocolate cake that looked scrumptious, it was about four inches high. You knew if you ate that you would pay for it the next day running on the treadmill like a wild-woman to shed those nasty yet yummy calories. We finally sat at a cute little table. Mr. Frugal had to sit across from me, that was an uncommon occurrence. Mr. S. is usually sitting right by my side which is quite adorable. My choice entree was Costa Rican Tilapia, Mr.Frugal ordered the Cajun Tilapia. Both entrees were excellent. Mine not quite as spicy as Mr. Frugal’s entree. Each entree was served with veges, and rice. There was no room for that sinful chocolate cake, maybe next time.. Whew, now I won’t be running like a wild-woman to burn off those unwanted calories, but I am sure it would have been worth it.
If you would like to try the quaint little restaurant in Newtown Pa, you can try the customer appreciation night. Customer appreciation night is Wednesday nights, and you can get a 3 course meal for the affordable price of twenty dollars.
Oh, by the way Mr. F gave the restaurant a thumbs up and some high marks, I think it may have been around at 7.5. I gave it about a 8.2 out of 10.0.
So, give it a try and see what you think. Bring your own bottle of wine, for it is BYOB. The parking is free and the service was excellent. Enjoy your cozy little find!16 South State Street -

Massage relaxes, promotes healing Revered through the ages Throughout human history, massage was used for everything from stiff, painful muscles to chronic disease. In China, medical texts refer to it as early as 3000 B.C. Today massage therapy is being used by a wide range of people as a pain reliever, antidote to stress, and enhancer of athletic performance. A survey conducted by the American Massage Therapy Association showed that 25 million more Americans received massage in the year 2006 than they did in 1996. Doctors are referring patients for massage as well. Andrew Weil, MD and author of Spontaneous Healing said, “[Massage] works on the premise … that the body can heal itself if given a chance. Massage nurtures the body’s talent for healing by triggering and supporting the body’s own healing response.” Recent research has shown that massage lowers blood pressure, increases circulation, relaxes muscles and improves range of motion . What’s more, it reduces the effects of stress and can ease the impulse to tighten in response to pain. Because of these results, many people are finding that massage helps them heal faster from injuries and disease. Studies also demonstrate that the benefits of regular massage tend to accumulate, easing long-term tension, conditioning tissues to help prevent injury, and enhancing your ability to breathe more deeply and relax more fully. This Valentine’s Day give your honey the gift that everyone loves… Massage! Aromatherapy, the art of scent Essential oils can boost your mood, relieve stress Aromatherapy is the application of essential oils through baths, spa treatments, facials or massage. Essential oils are distilled from plants — such as lavender, eucalyptus and peppermint — which give the oils their fragrances and therapeutic qualities. Research on the sense of smell has shown that scent is perceived by the part of the brain connected with emotion, and that a scent that pleases you or is associated with a happy event will increase your feeling of well-being. That effect can be heightened when essential oils, easily added to massage oils and creams, are combined with massage. According to Peter and Kate Damian, authors of Aromatherapy: Scent and Psyche — Using Essential Oils for Physical and Emotional Well-Being, jasmine, lavender, neroli (orange blossom), and rose are effective in reducing anxiety. These oils in addition to clary sage are helpful for panic and soothing the nerves. Jasmine and lavender as well as basil are believed to help improve sleep. While certified aromatherapists focus solely on the use of essential oils, other professionals such as estheticians, spa professionals and massage therapists often enhance their services with the wonderful properties of these oils. Massage for back pain Study shows long-term benefits Research has shown massage to be very effective in reducing low-back pain. One study published in the Archives of Internal Medicine followed back-pain sufferers who participated in three different groups receiving either massage, acupuncture, or educational information. After ten weeks, the massage group reported a 47% improvement, while the acupuncture group improved by 38% and the educational group improved by 27%. The study showed that the benefits of massage lasted far longer than the post-massage feeling of relaxation. Even a year after the study was finished, the massage group maintained benefits. How does massage reduce back pain? Massage eases tension and muscle spasm. As the muscles relax, circulation increases, bringing healing oxygen to the tissues. Certain massage techniques release painful trigger points, and increase flexibility and mobility in the body. Massage therapists are trained to be sensitive in dealing with sore, painful tissues. If you have back pain, the goal will be to work well within your pain threshold, gently encouraging relaxation in the back, and throughout the body. Imagine how much better your back, and your body overall, could feel with improved blood flow to the muscles, decreased tension and trigger points, relaxation and easier movement. The more high technology around us, the more the need for human touch. –John Naisbitt, Author of Megatrends MASSAGE THERAPY BY DONNA KIMMEL 111 BUCK RD. SUITE 300 267-988-8700 www.donnakimmel.com
